As constructed defense systems age, regular maintenance is needed in order to retain their health and ability to mitigate avalanche hazard. While use of built defense systems at the starting zone is somewhat novel in North America, there is a growing inventory of existing active and passive projects that will require period inspection and repair. The Alpine environment is tough, even on manmade systems using steel and concrete, and over time owner’s will need the technical expertise for condition assessment and rehabilitation work.
